What stuff we want to change
We know that relations between those students who live in the South Belfast community and their neighbours can sometimes be tense.
Residents are often unhappy with the levels of noise, litter, and antisocial behaviour in this area, and feel that the students who live there are a large part to blame.
This can affect your time at Queen’s in loads of different ways, from potentially feeling uncomfortable in your own neighbourhood, to being disciplined by the University if something does happen and you are in the wrong.
Your Union is here to help you have an amazing time at Queen’s, so we want to change this. Firstly, we want to help you get to know your neighbours a bit more and encourage you to be more considerate of them, and secondly, we want to shout about all the wonderful things you do so that your neighbours know just how amazing you all truly are.
So… we are launching the ‘Hey Neighbour’ Campaign!
How we are going to change it
Street Reps will champion the ‘Hey Neighbour’ campaign. Trained in areas like mediation and management they will be the first point of contact, by an anonymous email, for both students and residents in key areas across South Belfast (The Holylands; Stranmillis; Botanic; Lisburn Road; Malone Road; and Eglantine) to help if there’s a problem.
The Street Reps will be helped and supported by Chloe Patterson, Student Officer Community, to help them deal with any accommodation issues that they might be experiencing in the area and will run initiatives to implement wider community change, like voluntary litter picks to help clean up South Belfast.

As a Street Rep you’ll meet tons of great new people, be trained in loads of useful areas like mediation and management, become a point of contact to help both students and residents in your area, have the opportunity to start up your own initiatives to implement wider community change, and have your volunteering recognised by The Department of Education through Millennium Volunteers!
