What we want to change and why we want to change it
In the Union we recognised that we need to reflect the gender diversity that we have on campus. Currently toilets on campus are largely designated as ‘male’ or ‘female’, even for single occupancy toilets. This actively excludes people who do not conform to the gender binary of male or female.
‘Gender Neutral’ toilets create a more inclusive, welcoming and safe environment for everyone who use the toilets in our building. We want to make students more aware of the positive impact of removing gender from public toilets, while also ensuring that there is a greater choice of toilet provision on campus. Not all toilets need to be gender-neutral, as not everyone will feel safe in a shared bathroom. But we do want to see toilets that are in foyers and communal areas becoming gender neutral where appropriate.
How we are going to change it
So far we have changed the single occupancy toilets in the Union from ‘disabled’ to ‘gender neutral’ and ‘accessible’. Going forward we would also like to change our Ground Floor ‘male’ and ‘female’ toilets - at the moment we recognise that they don’t provide much in the way of privacy so this will be a longer process, but we will keep you updated on our progress.
Oisín has also been in discussion with Schools, Faculties and Services across campus to try and find ways to ensure gender neutral toilet provision across the 220 buildings on campus including committing to building gender-neutral facilities in future.
