Homework Clubs

Would you like to help local children and young people improve their study skills, build their confidence and raise their aspirations about further and higher education?

The Homework Clubs Programme gives Queen’s University volunteers the chance to provide homework support to children and young people who live in areas of educational underachievement. These pupils may not have the opportunity to complete their homework at home which can lead to underachieving in school, low confidence and limited future opportunities.

Homework Clubs is a perfect opportunity for you to make a positive change in your community, get involved in something rewarding and gain hands-on experience for your personal and professional development.

Homework Clubs is Queen's University CiviContribution Funded.

Tasks
- Helping children and young people with their homework
- Supporting children and young people to improve their study skills and confidence
- Raising aspirations of children/young people in relation to further and higher education by; engaging in meaningful conversation, sharing your positive educational experiences and encouraging them to fulfil their potential
- In some clubs, an opportunity to support with recreational activities, arts/crafts and educational games
- Being an ambassador for Queen's University and Queen's Students' Union
- Attending relevant training/induction
- Undertaking Access NI (criminal record) check, if your allocated club requires
- An optional opportunity to attend awareness workshops on areas such as special educational needs (keep checking your Queen’s email inbox for invitations)
- Discussing any concerns or issues with the Club co-ordinator or SU Volunteer if they crop up

Eligibility
We ask that you:
- Are currently registered as a Queen's University student
- Have experience and/or an interest in supporting children/young people
- Are patient, reliable, creative, flexible and open-minded
- Have good communication skills and organisational skills
- Are confident in speaking English, as an important part of this role is engaging in conversation with children/young people
- Are committed to this role and able to volunteer 1-3 hours each week during term time (as children/young people benefit from consistent support)

Recruitment Process
1. Submit application form
2. Candidates will be notified if their application has been successful
3. Successful candidates attend mandatory Induction Training
4. Processing of Access NI checks, if required by club (can take 1-3 weeks)
5. Local induction with Homework Club
6. Begin role
